2005 STPR PREVIEW
By: Cody Bowen
The 2005 edition of STPR is gearing up for another exciting round of the 2005 Rally America Championship.
This Championship year is set to go down as one of the most exciting since the factory teams left the U.S. rally scene.
Campaigning this year for the championship are returning SCCA Rally Championship winner Patrick Richard, driving his 2002
Grp. N WRX, and former World Rally Champion Stig Blomqvist driving a David Sutton Prepared 2004 Grp. N WRX STi. In the
two previous rounds, both Richard and Blomqvist have scored victories.
The Rally America Championship has some newcomers that have shown a lot of promise this year. Teammates
Travis Pastrana and Ken Block, driving brand new Grp. N WRX Sti's prepared by Vermont Sportscar, have been atop the leaderboard
all season long. Pastrana finished a close second behind Blomqvist at the recent Oregon Trail Rally, based in Hillsboro,
OR. Look for these teammates to keep moving thier way up the leaderboard as the season progresses.
STPR this year will see approximately 70 entries from all over the U.S, Canada, and Europe compete on some
of Pennsylvania's greatest roads. This event is the closest to the WRC as the U.S. Rally Championship gets. The
event boasts 110 miles of competition over 10 stages. Including the famous first stage known as the "creek crossing".
This is the only stage with a watersplash in the entire championship. Thousands of spectators, including photographers
and tv crews gather around the creek to enjoy the action.
The previous to editions of STPR have been plagued by rain but the forecast for this years event so far looks
dry. This means that the cars will be faster and tire wear more excessive than ever before.
Group N seems to be the class to beat for the podium at STPR this year. Names such as Richard, Blomqvist,
Pastrana, Block, Dimiters and Bacon will be battling it out all event long.
Open Class sees last years STPR Champion Shane Mitchell come back to defend his title. But look out
for Ramana Lagemann, previous champion Paul Choiniere, and Tom Lawless (winner of the 2005 Cherokee Trails Rally).
These guys will give the Group N guys a run for thier money this year.
The rally gets underway Saturday June 4. Come down to the Parc Expose at the Green and see the cars
off around 10am.
